Homelessness, It is a problem that plagues many people and many cities.  These people often live in alleys and city parks and are able to store everything they own in a backpack and or shopping cart.  While we don’t have the means to provide them with housing etc… We do have the ability to improve the way they live on the streets.  We’re calling it Bags for Rags. We will be touring select cities offering the homeless a hot meal, shower, shave etc… We will also provide them the opportunity to “trade in” Their shopping cart and or backpack for an OGIO 9900 sled gear bag, and back pack.  By upgrading from rags to bags the homeless will be more efficiently be able to carry their belongings from location to location.

Heller Response

“Who we are shapes what we make” “How you make something determines what you make” These two quotes caught my eye when reading chapter one. I fully agree with both of these quotes in the fact that every artist/designer has a distinct influence and style they incorporate into their work.kljfgdsjgkdf These thoughts and ideas remind me of another quote. “A leopard Can’t change it’s spots.” I chose that quote for my idiom project based upon the feelings of those expressed in the above paragraph. My translation of the quote was “An artist can’t change his inspiration.” While the two quotes are worded different, their message remains the same. You can’t change who you are or where you’re heart lies.Personally my taste and passion falls toward the “action sports” industry where athletes are embraced for their skills, individuality, progression. If these athletes fail, they have only themselves to blame. With these sports much like design Innovation is the name of the game, Those who are innovative usually find themselves on the podium in addition to progressing the sport.Innovation is also the name of the game in the design world. While the majority of designers use the tools available in the Adobe suite there are new offerings in the world of design that are surprisingly free and rely on the users to innovate, create, troubleshoot, and upgrade these tools. These offerings are called open source. Tons of websites are currently using Open Source programs in order to operate. Not all of them are design “tools” but many are sources of information created for public use. Ebay, Wikipedia, and Google are all open source based sites. For more information regarding open source one can visit www.opensource.org and scriptographer.com I have not yet had the opportunity to visit and explore the offerings of these sites, but plan on doing so over the weekend.Open Source tools and sites rely on the users to modify, fix problems, and make improvements. This in turn creates a very efficient program that can be considered more current and up to date that what is offered by the major mfgs. Users no longer have to wait for adobe release CD4 in order to receive the latest offerings and program changes. Instead users are able to “upgrade” over time picking up tools and options as they are created. It is this free thinking and innovation that is pushing certain software forward and into the spotlight. Now I am not saying that these open source programs and tools are going to take over and produce a better end product than anything offered by the major Mfgs. It is simply a new approach to what is currently being offered. What is offered in this Open Source format are tools. Granted they are new tools but they still need to be learned a honed by the designer. It is up to the designer to choose what tools they are going to use in order create their end product. This goes back to the quote “How you make something determines what you make.” It is up to the designer to choose the proper tool for the proper project. There may be a circumstance that one uses a combination of Open Source and “Mainstream” tools in order to meet the needs of their client. It is my opinion that the designer will choose what they are most comfortable working with, but often is when we step out of our comfort zones that the most profound innovation and progression take place.
